Support World IBD Day – May 19th

Today, many buildings and landmarks will be lit up in purple to celebrate World IBD Day.

World IBD Day allows people from more than 50 countries to join in raising awareness for IBD.  Check here to learn more about events that are happening around the world.

In addition, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation is working to raise funds, spread awareness and educate the public with their World IBD Day events and activities.  Common goals of those supporting this important day include finding a cure and improving quality of life for those living with IBD.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) affects over five million people worldwide and includes the chronic digestive disorders know as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis which cause chronic inflammation in the gut.  Both of these disorders bring daily challenges for those living with IBD that negatively impact quality of life with little understanding from the general public.

Symptoms can include abdominal pain, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, fever and weight loss and may even cause symptoms in other body systems aside from the GI tract.  Check out our previous blog to learn more about IBD.

How Our Formulas May Help Those Living with IBD

Due to the increased risk of malabsorption or overall poor nutrient intake associated with many gastrointestinal conditions, an amino acid-based formula may be recommended to help support nutrient intake. EquaCare Jr. is a nutritionally complete formula for children over the age of one year who may need a more affordable formula. Essential Care Jr. offers the same broken-down proteins and increased amounts of more easily absorbed fats, but with a carbohydrate source that is low FODMAP and less likely to contribute to the uncomfortable digestive symptoms seen with other highly fermentable carbohydrates.
