Top 3 Tips for Celebrating the Fourth of July Allergen-Free!

Managing food allergies can be particularly challenging during holidays like the Fourth of July, but planning ahead and preparing for safe festivities can help ensure that you can enjoy the time with your family and friends worry-free and allergen-free!

  1. Taking appropriate precautions with summer cookouts and barbeques can ensure a fun time for all. Consider communicating ahead of time with the host and bringing along safe options for your child. It’s also important to consider possible cross contact with problem foods in places such as grills or shared dishes and to be prepared for a severe allergic reaction by bringing an epi pen. More tips for avoiding cross contact can be found here.
  2. With many celebrations being held outside, the risk of exposure to a variety of allergens or triggers is often increased. Children may come in contact with stinging insects or pollens which may cause an allergic reaction.  In addition, it is important to read the ingredient label of sunscreens to look for your child’s allergens. Smoke from fireworks or barbecue grills may trigger a reaction in some children – particularly children who have asthma, so being prepared with an N95 mask may be a good idea. Most importantly, having antihistamines and 2 epi pens is crucial for keeping your child safe.
  3. Preparing treats for children with food allergies and gastrointestinal issues can be a good way of making sure that they never feel left out.
